Stargazing at La Palma in September
Canary Islands, Spain. Figures for September 2027, calculated by us. Times are local.
Good
In mid-September the sky is fully dark from about 21:36 to 06:37, 9 hours a night. The bright centre of the Milky Way is well up from about 21:41 to 23:31.
The darkest nights in September 2027
Nights when the Moon is down for almost all of the dark hours:
- 28 Aug to 5 Sept 2027 (9 nights)
- 26 Sept to 4 Oct 2027 (9 nights)
- Full Moon: 15 September 2027
- New Moon: 30 September 2027
What to know
- The Roque de los Muchachos Observatory stands at about 2,396 m.
- The Canary Islands’ ‘Sky Law’, approved in 1988, limits light pollution to protect the observatories.
- As on Tenerife, low clouds generally stay well below the summit ridge.
The summit road is long and winding. Allow plenty of time, and do not drive it for the first time in the dark if you can avoid it.
